Morse Function

A Morse function is a smooth real-valued function defined on a manifold that has certain critical points with specific properties. These critical points are classified based on the behavior of the function near them: a critical point is called a minimum, maximum, or saddle point depending on the sign of the second derivative (or the Hessian) evaluated at that point. Morse functions are significant in differential topology and are used to study the topology of manifolds through their level sets, which partition the manifold into regions where the function takes on constant values.

A key property of Morse functions is that they have only a finite number of critical points, each of which contributes to the topology of the manifold. The Morse lemma asserts that near a non-degenerate critical point, the function can be represented in a local coordinate system as a quadratic form, which simplifies the analysis of its topology. Moreover, Morse theory connects the topology of manifolds with the analysis of smooth functions, allowing mathematicians to infer topological properties from the critical points and values of the Morse function.

Butterworth Filter

A Butterworth filter is a type of signal processing filter designed to have a maximally flat frequency response in the passband. This means that it does not exhibit ripples, providing a smooth output without distortion for frequencies within its passband. The filter is characterized by its order nnn, which determines the steepness of the filter's roll-off; higher-order filters have a sharper transition between passband and stopband. The transfer function of an nnn-th order Butterworth filter can be expressed as:

where sss is the complex frequency variable and ωc\omega_cωc​ is the cutoff frequency. Persistent Segment Tree

This is achieved by creating new nodes for modified segments while keeping unmodified nodes shared between versions, leading to a space-efficient structure.

  • Updating: Each update operation takes O(log⁡n)O(\log n)O(logn) time, but instead of altering the original tree, it generates a new version of the tree that reflects the change.

This data structure is especially useful in scenarios where you need to maintain a history of changes, such as in version control systems or in applications where rollback functionality is required.

Labor Elasticity

Labor elasticity refers to the responsiveness of labor supply or demand to changes in various economic factors, such as wages, employment rates, or productivity. It is often measured as the percentage change in the quantity of labor supplied or demanded in response to a one-percent change in the influencing factor. For example, if a 10% increase in wages leads to a 5% increase in the labor supply, the labor elasticity of supply would be calculated as:
