Knowunity is built for school, and it is strong there. At university, what you need from a study app changes.
Many first-year students know Knowunity from their last years at school: notes from other learners, an AI study companion and homework help from a photo. Once university starts, the question is whether the app is still enough, or whether a tool that works with your module's slides and past exams fits better.

What Knowunity does well
Knowunity (Knowunity GmbH, Berlin) is a study app rated 4.6 stars from more than 61,000 ratings in the German App Store. By its own account it is available in 32 countries and offers the following as of October 2026:

On privacy, Knowunity is more transparent than many study apps. Its privacy policy names its AI providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Vertex in the EU, and Mistral), hosting is mainly in Frankfurt and Ireland, and according to Knowunity the providers do not train on user input.
For school, that is a strong package. Curricula are shared across a region, so other learners' notes often match your own lessons well. And snapping a photo of your homework is exactly what everyday school life calls for.
What changes between school and university
At university, both the source of the content and the way you are examined shift.
The content lives in your lecturer's slides and script, and the lecturer also decides what goes into the exam. Other people's notes only help if they come from the same module with the same lecturer. How to check a shared document for that is covered in Studocu alternatives.
Where acemate works differently
Only your material, with sources. You upload slides, scripts and problem sheets (PDF, PowerPoint, Word). The AI tutor answers from this material and cites document and page. Answers that go beyond your files are labelled as general AI knowledge.
Past exams as a template. acemate extracts an uploaded past exam, writes model answers and generates new exams in the same style. You export them as PDF, with or without solutions.
Flashcards with spaced repetition. acemate generates flashcards from your files, or you write your own, images included. The FSRS algorithm schedules your reviews. You can import and export Anki decks.

Which app suits whom
Stay with Knowunity while you are at school or preparing for your final exams. It can stay useful at university too, if you like learning from YouTube explainers, study on the go a lot or swap notes in group chats.
Choose acemate if you are preparing for a specific university exam and already have your material. Then what counts is that every explanation comes from your script, that you can check it by page number, and that the mock exam looks like the real one.
An example. You studied biology for your final school exams with Knowunity and now face your first cell biology exam. The lecture has several hundred slides, and your lecturer has released two past exams. For this exam, practising with exactly those slides and past exams gets you further than notes from school.
