StudySmarter is the broader study platform. acemate is built more narrowly: for university exams, from your own material.
Both apps come from Germany, both turn uploaded files into flashcards and mock exams, and both use spaced repetition. At first glance they look almost the same. The difference lies in who they are built for and where the content comes from.
This comparison comes from acemate, which makes us one of the two sides. So we describe StudySmarter from its public information, as of October 2026, and say clearly where StudySmarter is the better choice. Outside German-speaking countries, StudySmarter is called Vaia.
In short: which one suits you?
Choose StudySmarter if …
Choose acemate if …
- you study on the go a lot and want an app
- ready-made study sets from others help you get started
- you also study for school or vocational training
- you are studying for a specific university exam
- you already have your material, such as slides and past papers
- you need to check your working in subjects with formulas
What StudySmarter does well
StudySmarter (StudySmarter GmbH, Munich) is an all-in-one study platform, branded Vaia internationally since 2023. According to its own information, it offers the following as of October 2026:
- AI flashcards and AI mock exams from your own scripts and notes
- Spaced repetition for flashcards. StudySmarter does not name the algorithm.
- Study plans up to your exam
- Shared study sets from the community, and textbook solutions
- Apps for iOS and Android plus a web version, rated 4.5 stars from more than 9,000 ratings in the German App Store
Its strength is breadth. If you used StudySmarter at school, you can simply keep going at university. The mobile app makes flashcards on the train easy, and for many foundation courses you find ready-made sets before you have written a single card yourself.
Where acemate works differently
acemate is narrower and goes deeper into the exam for your module.
Only your material, with sources. You upload slides, scripts and problem sheets (PDF, PowerPoint, Word). The AI tutor answers from this material and cites document and page. When an answer goes beyond your files, acemate labels it as general AI knowledge. That way you can look up every explanation in your script before you learn it.
Past exams as a template. You upload a past exam as a PDF. acemate extracts the questions, writes model answers and generates new exams in the same style. You export them as PDF, with or without solutions, and sit them like the real thing.

Practice with feedback. Exercises come as multiple choice and open questions at the difficulty you choose. Open answers get AI feedback against criteria.
See where you struggle. The Knowledge Graph shows your course's topics, coloured by your results in exercises, quizzes and flashcards. Weak topics stand out at once.
For technical subjects. Notes can contain LaTeX formulas and chemical notation, and export as PDF.

Which app suits whom
Choose StudySmarter if you study on the go a lot and want a native app, if ready-made sets from others help you get started, or if you are also learning for school or vocational training. If you want a study plan up to the exam, you will find one there too.
Choose acemate if you are preparing for a specific university exam and already have your material: slides, script, perhaps a few past exams from your student association. Then what counts is that every explanation comes from your script and the mock exam looks like the real one. That matters most in subjects with formulas, where you need to rework answers yourself.
An example. You are in your third semester of business studies, the cost accounting exam is in two weeks, and your student association has three past exams from your lecturer. Then working through those exams and practising new ones in the same style helps most. If you are in your first semester instead, study a lot on the train and want flashcards on basic terms that others have already made, StudySmarter is more convenient.
You can also use both. Use StudySmarter for sets on the go and acemate for mock exams from your script. Flashcards you already have in Anki can be imported into acemate and exported again whenever you need.
